Other hardcovers I've picked up since have been wrapped, so maybe it's a one-time thing -- I had wondered if maybe it was intentional on DC's part, but it seems not.

I thought that "spirit gum" panel that Liang mentioned was a tad awkward, too, but I loved Quitely's take on Alfred -- there was a grandfatherly, Norman Rockwell-type shine to those scenes that I thought was even more powerful than the action sequences.

Quitely's coming back to this book at some point, right?collectededitionshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14698269790653953645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-60868045785363254222010-05-17T19:03:12.982-05:002010-05-17T19:03:12.982-05:00It's interesting that you say your copy came u...It's interesting that you say your copy came unwrapped. After my comic shop closed a year ago, I had to switch to a mail order service, and while I love it for the variety and huge discounts, it comes with the occasional screwup. My copy of Batman and Robin came unwrapped, and with some damage at the top as a result. They're sending me a new copy, and I'd hoped maybe it would come wrapped in plastic and therefore protected, but it looks like that's not a possibility (although Mike says his came wrapped, so...)Shanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09526065680698553188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-73039493708594849272010-05-17T18:58:51.267-05:002010-05-17T18:58:51.267-05:00I feel like this was a film that has a fantastic s...I feel like this was a film that has a fantastic story and ideas, but horrid acting. I'm referring to the dialogue Morrison writes. While the Pyg dance number is creepily comedic, most of the dialogue sounds like each of the characters are in some Hammed Up Opera, talking like everything they say may be turned into a button or a catch phrase. For Jason, this was intentional, but when Dick and Damian start doing it the supposed juxtaposition dies out.

This isn't helped by Frank Quietly's wrinkle art. It shines in some aspects: the Batmobile flying makes me smile a big one when I look at the image, but there's a frame of Damian peeling his mask off (Apperantly using Spirit gum, so he uses a butter knife which may explain why he doesn't pull off the mask when he rips the R off, not to detract from the thematic point you made) and in this frame Damian looks like a little Gremlin, 70 years old and angry. It's bits like this and the Penguin depiction that turn me off to Frank Quietly's art and adds to the idea that the characters are hamming up their "performance".

I loved the story, though, Jason comes off a bit more crazy but the thematic duel makes sense and the circus of the strange is a great set of villains for circus born Dick Grayson. It just had some downturns with the dialogue and art.Liang Xiuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14356479769962765014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-40304536818359854322010-05-17T17:40:44.240-05:002010-05-17T17:40:44.240-05:00Batman & Robin came unwrapped here too.

Agree with pretty much everything you've said; I really can't wait for volume 2 to come out (and it's going to be a pain to avoid spoilers from now on).

Quitely was, as expected, magnificent. Is there any storyteller as inventive and fluid as he is? I was expecting a trainwreck from Tan, judging by the seemingly universal criticism of his section, but I quite liked his half of the book. It's a bit more conventional, especially since he had to follow Frank Quitely, and some of the storytelling is a bit confusing, but overall I thought it was appropriately moody and effective.
