The ridicule of the idea that existed at the time and was never replaced doesn't really negate the strength of the idea, which was a vast improvement over the Parasite saga from a few years earlier, where Superman became a giant brute (cue awful memories of the similar Wolverine era). Changing the status quo has become a routinely ridiculed phenomenon (*cough* Marvel) these days, but it was a custom of '90s DC storytelling, even before Doomsday and Bane. You had a new Supergirl and "new" Lex Luthor running around.
