It's part of why I dropped the book after Lemire's first arc; a team book needs to behave like a team book, not a Constantine book with window dressing (even if that window dressing is Frankenstein).Zach Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17905320964723323391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-54929097482669839792012-12-10T11:24:51.488-06:002012-12-10T11:24:51.488-06:00Threadjack: Gail Simone was fired as the writer of...Threadjack: Gail Simone was fired as the writer of Batgirl by the new editor, by e-mail. Here's hoping she goes to Marvel. With Karen Berger leaving Vertigo in the new year and the cancelation of the long running Hellblazer series the Vertigo line which has always been one of the things that set DC apart could be in trouble. With the success of Marvel Now and the seemingly endless complaints from creative staff about DC editorial meddling, DC better watch be careful that they don't lose their talent. As it is they are already recycling retreads from the 90's like Lobdell, Nicezia, Defalco, Nocenti etc. Creators are looking for and expect more freedom, not less in today's age. They better be careful they don't lose guys like Lemire and Snyder.Nikosnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-73256689292382601372012-12-10T10:56:19.747-06:002012-12-10T10:56:19.747-06:00There's some interesting character stuff in Mi...There's some interesting character stuff in Milligan's first arc, but there's an aimlessness to it that gives me the impression that he was struggling with getting a handle on the team and its purpose in the DCU, which is exactly where Lemire succeeded when he took over the writing reins.shagamuhttp://mbbforum.com/mbbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-74508526573065704212012-12-10T10:30:32.443-06:002012-12-10T10:30:32.443-06:00I bought and read the trade back in October, and a...I bought and read the trade back in October, and although it may not be a great book, but I do still feel it's a good book and reasonably good for Lemire's run on the title.

I like that there is a team that deals with the weird and mystical branch of the DCU. I love the team members being C-list characters only. And considering the confines of the DC52 over Vertigo, I can take the idea of a dumb-down set of characters like Constantine. I look at this way: you have your more streamlined DC Constantine and your typical who-knows-what-he'll-do-next Vertigo Constantine (even though Vertigo Constantine will be no more after issue 300 in March...). So overall, I think it's a good book.

I think many people were disappointed in it because they had too high of standards and anticipation for the title (much like the sounds of Jordan felt above, as well as a bunch of people I know and media outlets who felt the same way). I think if people dropped those expectations, I think it would of gotten much more acclaim.

But my only real complaint from the book was the introduction of the Justice League. They did not need to be here at all. I know Milligan wanted to show the JL can't handle all threats...but it could of been handled differently. Because it made the A-team Justice League of Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Batman look pathetically weak by pointing out their weakness in magic. Really? I can see them being weak to magic, but not helpless. The idea that the A-team can't do it...might as well send in the B--heck, C-team to solve the problem? That's my greatest peeve. Constantine, Deadman, Zatanna, Shade, Enchantress are ALL intriguing and solid characters in-and-of-themselves. It's a double-edge sword about this concept: it makes the Justice League look embarrassingly weak and helpless, while it puts down the JLD members as almost non interesting and weak. That's why the Justice League did not need to be in this book.

Aside from that, I liked it. I laid out all the setups for being a team book and Jeff Lemire taking over sky rockets it all tremendously (I'm reading the single issues and it is oh-so good)AngryLionheart1https://www.blogger.com/profile/08551845755863689101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-27433237767414740392012-12-10T08:09:44.534-06:002012-12-10T08:09:44.534-06:00I collected the first two issues of JL Dark when t...I collected the first two issues of JL Dark when they hit the stands, and...I had no clue what was happening. Is it just me? I found the storytelling to just be completely nuts, all over the place, I had no idea who anyone was or why anything was happening. I am a fan of a lot of these characters and of Peter Milligan so I was incredibly disappointed. Jordanhttp://www.sallyband.comnoreply@blogger.com
