I also loved the way he gradually expanded the GCPD supporting cast too and opted not to make them look just like second stringersAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-64249391374389133182010-12-22T14:35:58.941-06:002010-12-22T14:35:58.941-06:00I just read this story recently myself so I was pl...I just read this story recently myself so I was pleasantly surprised to see a review on it, especially from someone who seems to enjoy it as much as I did. Chuck Dixon is great, everything he writes is solid. I don't remember reading a bad story or even issue written by him ever. You could say he just writes "standard" superhero stories, which doesn't seem to be very trendy compared to current comics. But sometimes you just get tired of writers throwing out crazy ideas all the time and trying to show off how clever they are. Dixon's stories always had great pacing and he really nails his characters' voices. Also wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Doug Braithwaite art with Lee Loughridge coloring on the Green Arrow issues, those were by far my favorites artwise in the storyline.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-82887472847002725282010-12-20T17:21:55.929-06:002010-12-20T17:21:55.929-06:00Speaking of Sterling Gates, I just took a look at ...Speaking of Sterling Gates, I just took a look at DC's March solicitations, and GLC #21-22 will be collected along with Tony Bedard's first arc (GLC #48-52), which also deals with the Alpha Lanterns.shagamuhttp://mbbforum.com/mbbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-75421468825197302572010-12-20T16:22:37.069-06:002010-12-20T16:22:37.069-06:00I have been able to fill in some uncollected issue...I have been able to fill in some uncollected issues through the DC Comics Online Digital Comics store through Comixology (and then read them on an iPad). I was able to buy 4 issues of Wonder Woman, the two Sterling Gates GLC issues (GLC 21-22), Superman-Batman 7, 26, and the 3-part Metal Men team-up, as well as the uncollected Untold Tales of Blackest Night one-shot. I hope they keep putting other uncollected issues like this up to buy. This would be a great medium to make available the now-cancelled Manhunter back-up issues TPB.ComicReaderDudenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-25181795391345129252010-12-20T15:34:07.757-06:002010-12-20T15:34:07.757-06:00DC had a lot of winners in the 90s. DC also had umpteen bat family magazines....at a time it seemed Chuck Dixon wrote all of them...and that's saying something. I couldn't buy LEGACY in TPB so tried collecting it in single formats. It contained 2 issues of DETECTIVE (DIXON), 2 issues of ROBIN (DIXON),1 issue of NIGHTWING (DIXON),1 issue of CATWOMAN(DIXON), 2 issues of BATMAN (MOENCH & 2 issues of SHADOW OF THE BAT (GRANT). Do the math. If the 2 preludes which I have included didn't appear in the trade (1 by MOENCH, 1 by GRANT) well it's more Dixon for your money.

I recently interacted wit Mr Chuck who asked me whether I could speak/read other languages as Planeta De Agostini has published FULL RUNS of his work on ROBIN, NIGHTWING, CATWOMAN & BIRDS OF PREY (they also have the whole SPECTRE, MARTIAN MANHUNTER by Ostrander) and at the end said that the DETECTIVE issues are the worst to find, as they don't get selectively reprinted anywhere.

Except for the odd crossover or two, I actually can't find them (I was introduced to them thru Gotham entertainment, which had licensed the issues for Indian publication and successfully printed around a dozen or so) and that's a pity. I have no idea of NIGHTWING, CATWOMAN but Dixon was boss on DETECTIVE & BOP.

What's another uncollected edition (and I would like to know how many of you remember it) is a 3 part story called FABLES-it ran in the 1989 annuals of DETECTIVE COMICS, THE QUESTION & GREEN ARROW. It was written by Dennis O'Neil (whose spectacular THE QUESTION MONTHLY which ran for 36 issues has been colected in 6 trades, by the by)Aalok Madhusudan Joshihttp://aalokmjoshi.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-2054534645653719112010-12-20T12:04:23.922-06:002010-12-20T12:04:23.922-06:00I'm not a huge fan of Dixon, but the way you d...I'm not a huge fan of Dixon, but the way you describe this sounds like fun.

Also, DC had some winners - hello there Hitman - but Marvel more or less blew in the 90's, so I'm not sure the scales are really tipped towards comics being good in the 90's.dl316bhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14779958088602323101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-5658031675632243752010-12-20T11:01:37.778-06:002010-12-20T11:01:37.778-06:00That was a very fun little crossover indeed, and a...That was a very fun little crossover indeed, and also my first exposure to Alex Maleev's art. I like it when a writer is allowed to run his/her own little corner of the DC universe, with subtle connections between the books he/she writes, and Dixon was great at that.shagamuhttp://mbbforum.com/mbbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10945794.post-83844979290948142112010-12-20T08:49:39.324-06:002010-12-20T08:49:39.324-06:00How nice to wake up on a Monday morning and see a ...How nice to wake up on a Monday morning and see a review of one of my favorite - yet uncollected - storylines. Dixon is the person that made me become a Batman fan again after a long absence. The interactions between Connor and the Bat-Family is fun and engaging. There a lot of excellent fight scenes and the climax is spectacular!
I remember on the official DC Comic Boards that some people wondered if Conner was going to join up with Batman in some capacity.
I also remember Fanboys referring to this mini as "Brotherhood Of The Monkey Fist" or "Brotherhood Of The Monkey".Chris Marshallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04013249170461433118noreply@blogger.com
