Sandman Mystery Theatre #70

In the wake of the DC Comics Fall 2025 catalog release, there’s not much surprising in the DC Comics July 2025 trade paperback and hardcover solicitations.

Rather this is the rollout of what we’re already expecting through the end of the year — exciting DC Finest titles like DC Finest: Batman: Red Skies, plus controversial and welcome collections (respectively) like the Superman: The Triangle Era Omnibus Vol. 2 and the Sandman Mystery Theatre Compendium Two. We’ve also got regular series titles like Green Arrow Vol. 4: Fresh Water Kills, Question: All Along The Watchtower, the DC All In JSA Vol. 1, Black Lightning: The Standard, and Batgirl Vol. 1: Mother.

I say not “much” surprising because, after much discussion led by long-time contributor Zach King, we find that the Batman '66 Compendium does contain Lee and Michael Allred’s Batman '66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes despite earlier solicitations. This underscores that despite what we’ve seen listed in the catalogs, essentially we never know what a book’s going to contain until it’s actually, officially solicited (though sometimes not even then!).

Let’s take a look at the full list.

Absolute Batman: The Long Halloween (2026 Edition) HC

New printing of the Absolute edition of the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale miniseries. In keeping with a trend I’ve noticed, the title hasn’t changed to “Title: The Absolute Edition” given that this one’s a reprint.

Absolute Promethea Book Two (2026 Edition) HC

New printing, collecting Promethea #13–24.

Aquamanatee HC

Young readers book by Ben Clanton and Cassandra Federman, in September.

Batgirl Vol. 1: Mother TP

I’m so used to two Batgirls or Barbara-Gordon-as-Batgirl at this point that I’ve got some reservations about a Cassandra Cain-led series, though her last solo series was at times one of my favorites. Anyway, issues #1–6 by Tate Brombal and Takeshi Miyazawa, in paperback in August, coming in August.

Batman '66 Compendium TP

Previously solicited as Batman '66 #1–30, Batman '66: The Lost Episode, and a story from Mike Allred’s Solo #7, but now we see … drumroll please … Batman '66 Meets Wonder Woman '77 #1–6 and Batman '66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes. There you go, Zach!

Batman by Grant Morrison Book Two TP

Collects Batman #676–683 and #700, Batman & Robin #1–9, and a story from DC Universe #0, being Batman: RIP and Batman and Robin Vol. 1: Batman Reborn, among others. There’s a definite DC All In bent to the (solicited) new cover with diagonal white corners and color center band.

Batman: Year 100 (2025 Edition) TP

I have never read Paul Pope’s four-issue 2006 miniseries, but maybe this is my opportunity.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: DC Compact Comics TP

Compact Comics edition of the Grant Morrison/Dave McKean classic. I wonder if there is any comic where DC doesn’t think the size/formatting would fit in the Compact size.

Batman: The Demon Trilogy (2025 Edition) HC

New printing of the collection of Batman: Birth of the Demon, Batman: Bride of the Demon, and Batman: Son of the Demon at “the original trim size”, 8 1/8" x 10 3/4", and essays by Mike Barr and Mark Hamill — that’s an animated Joker thing, I guess? I offered some thoughts on Son of the Demon once upon a time around Infinite Crisis (some of you were there!).

Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation Joker and Harley Quinn: The Deluxe Edition HC

Collects both Batman: White Knight Presents: Harley Quinn and Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation Joker by Sean Murphy, Katana Collins, and Clay McCormack, with an introduction by Collins.

Black Canary: Best of the Best HC

In hardcover by Tom King and Ryan Sook, coming in September, collecting the six-issue miniseries. The solicitation calls this “an opus of the visual medium” and here’s hoping.

Black Lightning: The Standard TP

In paperback in August, collecting the five-issue miniseries by Brandon Thomas and Fico Ossio, tying in to Justice League Unlimited. Collects Black Lightning #1–5 and stories from DC’s Saved by the Belle Reve #1, DC Power 2024 #1, and DC Power: Rise of the Power Company #1.

DC Finest: Batman: Red Skies TP

The final year or so of Bat-titles leading up to Crisis on Infinite Earths (and whereabouts the Batman: Caped Crusader/Dark Knight Detective volumes pick up). Collected is the Batman story from Secret Origins #6, the Batman Annual #10, and Detective Comics #553–567 and Batman #386 (or #388) to #400 — the previous solicitation said #386 and this one says #388, but I’m inclined to believe it’s #386 because that’s when artist Tom Mandrake joined writer Doug Moench on Batman. Harlan Ellison’s got a story in the book as well; Gene Colan draws some of Detective and Denys Cowan has the annual. Another cool sequence of issues demonstrating DC Finest on the right track.

DC Finest: Hawkman: Wings Across Time TP

Something’s up with this solicitation, as the ISBN is for DC Finest: Justice League of America: The Return but the description is for DC Finest: Hawkman: Wings Across Time, which is what I’m guessing this actually is. That’d be the Silver Age debut of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, collecting Brave and the Bold #34–36, #42–44, and #51; Mystery in Space #87–90; Atom #7; and Hawkman #1–11 (formerly listed as #1–16). Hawkman #4 was part of the “Zatanna’s Search” crossover.

DC Finest: Horror: The Devil's Doorway TP

Collects late 1960s/early 1970s stories including House of Secrets #81–85, House of Mystery #180–185, Phantom Stranger #5, Witching Hour #3–7, and Unexpected #113–117. Contributors include Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, Gerry Conway, Bernie Wrightson, and Alex Toth.

DC Finest: The Spectre: The Wrath of the Spectre TP

Collects Showcase #60–61 and #64; Spectre #1–10; Brave and the Bold #72, #75, #116, #180; Adventure Comics #431–440; Wrath of the Spectre #4; All-Star Squadron #27–28; and Ghosts #97–99; being Silver and Bronze Age appearances.

DC Horror Presents TP

Collecting the four-issue DC Horror Presents miniseries, in paperback in August. Only $9.99 according to the solicitation.

DC x Sonic The Hedgehog TP

In paperback in September, collecting the miniseries by Ian Flynn and Adam Bryce Thomas. I know it’s a different company and different license, but now I want Green Lantern/Mega Man and Hellblazer x Castlevania. I could go on. … Kid Flash Meets Kid Icarus? OK, I’m done.

The Flash by Joshua Williamson Omnibus Vol. 2 HC

Coming in September, this collects Batman #64–65, Flash #36–69, and Flash Annual #1–2. Give or take, that’s Flash Vol. 6: Cold Day in Hell, Flash Vol. 7: Perfect Storm, Flash Vol. 8: Flash War, Flash Vol. 9: Reckoning of the Forces, “The Price” from Heroes in Crisis: The Price and Other Stories, and Flash Vol. 10: The Greatest Trick of All.

Dr. Fate/Dr. Mario?

Green Arrow Vol. 4: Fresh Water Kills TP

Collects a story from Green Arrow #17 (presumably new writer Chris Condon’s) and issues #18–24 of the DC All In debut, in paperback in September.

Harley Quinn: Wild At Heart: DC Compact Comics Edition TP

What’s called “Wild at Heart” here was previously solicited as containing the first 13 issues (plus the Zero Month issue) of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s New 52 Harley Quinn run, being Harley Quinn Vol. 1: Hot in the City and Harley Quinn Vol. 2: Power Outage, give or take the “Future’s End” issue and Comic-Con special. The #0 issue has art by Walter Simonson, Darwyn Cooke, Jim Lee, John Timms, and more.

The Hawkman Omnibus by Geoff Johns (2025 Edition) HC

Collects Hawkman #1–25, Hawkman Secret Files #1, and JSA #56–58. That’s Hawkman: Endless Flight, Hawkman: Allies & Enemies, Hawkman: Wings of Fury, and JSA: Black Reign.

JLA Earth 2 Deluxe Edition (2025 Edition) HC

New printing of the Deluxe-size edition of the Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely graphic novel.

JSA Vol. 1: Infinity Inc. vs the Justice Society TP

First volume of the DC All In series by Jeff Lemire, collecting issues #1–6 in hardcover in September.

Kid Flash: Going Rogue TP

Young readers OGN starring Wallace “Ace” West, by Spider-Ham’s Steve Foxe and Jerry Gaylord.

Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet TP

Previously solicited as containing Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #1–4 and Milestone 30th Anniversary Special by Joe Illidge with Darryl Banks, Atagun Ilhan, and Ray-Anthony Height, following from the Icon vs. Hardware miniseries.

The Question: All Along The Watchtower TP

Collecting the miniseries by Alex Segura and Cian Tormey, in paperback in August.

Sandman Mystery Theatre Compendium Two TP

Completing Matt Wagner’s Sandman Mystery Theatre with issues #37–70, plus a story from Vertigo: Winter’s Edge #1–2. Coming in August. The solicitation says “each issue has been painstakingly restored for fans who have patiently awaited the series conclusion”; I can’t say they’re listening here, but DC is clearly listening somewhere.

Scooby Apocalypse Omnibus HC

The whole 36-issue series by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Howard Porter, and company, coming in September.

The Sheriff of Babylon TP

I reviewed Tom King’s Sheriff of Babylon in 2020, a riveting police procedural and crime thriller. This edition is said to include a new introduction by King and afterword by artist Mitch Gerads.

Superman: The Triangle Era Omnibus Vol. 2 HC

Said to collect Superman #64–77, Adventures of Superman #487–499, Action Comics #674–686, Superman: The Man of Steel #9–21; Justice League America #69, Superman: Legacy of Superman #1, Supergirl/Team Luthor Special #1, and Newstime: The Life and Death of Superman #1. Don’t miss my overview of the contents of Superman: The Triangle Era Omnibus Vol. 2.

Teen Titans: Starfire (Connecting Cover Edition) TP

Penultimate volume in the YA graphic novel series by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo, in the connecting covers edition.

Wonder Woman by John Byrne Omnibus HC

This collects Byrne’s Wonder Woman #101–136 and Wonder Woman Annual #5–6 from the previous three Wonder Woman by John Byrne books, plus stories from Adventures of Superman #440 and Action Comics #600 (earlier in Byrne’s Super-titles run), Adventure Comics 80-Page Giant #1, Sergio Aragonés Destroys DC #1, and Wonder Woman Secret Files & Origins #1.

Wonder Woman: Blood and Guts: DC Compact Comics Edition TP

No contents listed but I expect this is issues #0–12 from the New 52 series by Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, and company.

  1. Clearly the Sandman compendium vol 2 was supposed to also have Midnight Theater, the Sandman/Sandman crossover (it's even mentioned in the forward of vol 1) but for obvious reasons it's absent. I'm a little annoyed it will be incomplete though I understand the reasoning.

    1. At least most would have that if they collected Sandman/Gaiman stuff already. I'm just so glad this is finally coming out! Still annoyed I have to sell the trades they had started though.

    2. Midnight Theater probably should have opened the second compendium (evidently it takes place between #36 and #37). I have the Midnight Theater issue in the Gaiman anthology "Midnight Days," and it was recently reprinted in the fifth Black Label trade for Sandman proper (with Endless Nights and The Dream Hunters).

At any rate, I understand the completionist's impulse to include it here, but I'd much rather not buy any more books with Gaiman's name on the cover or on the residuals checks.

The John Byrne Omnibus should have a Jay Garrick story from Speed Force #1. According to the final caption box it leads into Wonder Woman #129 where Garrick guest-stars.

    1. That "Speed Force" story was included in "DC Universe by John Byrne" -- but not, annoyingly, in the three HCs for his Wonder Woman run.

It's absolutely unhinged to include the "Sergio Aragones" pages, which Byrne only inked. (Mark Evanier wrote the one-shot.) Yet I kind of love it. Someone in the collected editions department is REALLY paying attention.

  3. Looking forward to the Sandman Mystery Theatre. I've pre-ordered it. Hopefully sales are strong enough on both volumes that they release an Omnibus of the series (much more durable). If they do, I don't mind double-dipping.
